Butterfly Paradise does not only enable people to see such beautiful insects close but also illuminates on the conservation efforts that play an important role in their existence. Climate change, pesticide use and loss of habitat are causing many butterfly species to disappear. London Zoo is involved in the worldwide campaign to turn this around, helping to fund habitat protection and reintroduction projects worldwide.

Giants of the Galápagos: Gentle Legends

The Giants of the Galapagos is a must visit, whether it is the fluttering butterfly or the biggest tortoises in the world. In this case, you are welcomed to a warm environment that is created to mimic the remote and distinct Galapagos Islands.

A Galapagos tortoise is not only impressive, as it is huge, but also a living legend of evolutionary science. These animals differed on each island, and when Charles Darwin came to visit the islands in 1835, he used this to form his ground-breaking theory of natural selection.

These peaceful giants make their home at the London Zoo where they have a specially designed enclosure with two lagoon pools, a muddy wallow where they can spa, and tropical vegetation to wander around in. The lazy pace of the tortoises might appear to be relaxed but their history is of survival. The 14 species that were there have now been reduced to 11, as centuries of hunting and environmental imbalance have taken its toll.

This exhibit is also an avenue of sensitizing the world about the dangers that gorillas in the wild are facing such as habitat destruction, poaching and disease. ZSL is already engaged in conservation efforts in Central Africa and through local communities and international partners, these efforts are aimed at securing the future of these spectacular animals.
